Travel - Items to consider

Travel Insurance / Extended Health Coverage

We recommend that all canoe families check that they are covered for any accidents and medical coverage that they may need in the event of an emergency. Compare policies, coverage limitations, and particulars that are specific to your own case. If you have a pre-existing condition, if you are relatively healthy, your age and your gender all impact your coverage.

There are a number of ways to ensure that you have coverage or to obtain coverage. The following are some suggestions, but please find an option that is right for you and your family.

  • Contact your regular health insurance provider to add on travel medical for the duration of Tribal Journeys.

  • Contact your credit card company - many credit card companies offer travel medical insurance that covers you for accidents or medications that may be needed unexpectedly.

Medical care in a country that is not your own can be expensive. We strongly encourage all canoe families to make the investment in Travel Insurance to avoid incurring any larger expenses in the case of accidents.

Currency Exchange

To ensure you get the most out of your money, please exchange your currency with a bank or other financial institutions. Currency Exchanges often take a percentage of your money for the convenience of their services, and stores or businesses will not often accept American money.

Phone and Bank Considersations

PHONE SERVICE - As you cross the border into Canada, consider adding a roaming plan or other out of country service to your monthly phone plan to avoid excessive charges for using your phone on Canadian networks. Contact your service provider for information.

BANK NOTIFICATIONS - Consider notifying your bank that you are crossing the border to ensure that they do not flag the use of your card for unusual activity across the border. Otherwise, your cards may be frozen until you contact your institution.
